Learning outcomes: |
The participant of the course will know modern methods used in genetics and plant breeding, will be able to explain a meaning of biological progress in horticultural and gardening production, to define the purpose and principles of plant breeding, basic breeding programs used in vegetable, fruit and ornamental species. A student will know a meaning of resistance breeding as a method of environmental protection and will be able to explain some benefits and risks of plants’ transformation. Student acquires the theoretical and practical knowledge connected with biology, genetics, plant breeding, global agriculture. Student acquires the ability to define basic genetic processes occurring in the cell, organism and population. The participant of the course will know methods of selection for improving self-pollinated and cross-pollinated crops, methods of breeding hybrid cultivars, mutation breeding, breeding for resistance to diseases and abiotic stresses, breeding for quality traits, biotechnology in breeding horticultural plants. Ending the subject gives the student possibility of further education in such fields like: biotechnology, molecular genetics and genetic engineering. The knowledge of basic molecular genetic methods gives the student a chance to find a job in biotechnological or tissue laboratories, research institutes, plant breeding or other units of the broader agricultural production. |
